Perfecting Your Game
Harry Eyres of the Financial Times had an interesting article on how staying focused on your task can help improve your investment performance. Consider a top tennis or golf athlete; they need to "keep their head down" while making a stroke to assure the ball goes the desired direction. If they look up too fast, because they are nervous or impatient, they tend to send the ball off course.
With investments, it is important to stay focused on the long term fundamentals, not to be swayed by the daily chatter or market swings. Stay with your reasons and criteria for buying and sell your investments. If they are still meeting your goals, stick with them. If they no longer are meeting your goals or your reasons for holding them have changed, it is time to make a change. Your game will improve and the results will be more satisfying in the long run.
